Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) newcomer Tyrell Fortune picked up a major win in his UFC debut, defeating No. 8-ranked Heavyweight Marcin Tybura via unanimous decision at UFC Seattle last night (Sat., March 28, 2026) inside Climate Pledge Arena in Seattle, Washington.
But instead of celebrating, Fortune found himself in a bizarre and deflating moment.
Veteran Octagon announcer Bruce Buffer mistakenly read the scorecards in Tybura’s favor — prompting Fortune to exit the cage, believing he had lost his debut.
What followed was pure chaos.
Tybura stood alone in the cage as confusion set in before Buffer quickly realized the error. Officials scrambled to bring Fortune back, and moments later, the correct decision was announced in his favor.
It was an incredibly rare blunder — and while it made for an awkward (and somewhat comedic) scene for viewers, it didn’t feel that way for Fortune in the moment.
“It was heartbreaking, you know?” Fortune said during his post-fight media scrum. “I came in on two weeks’ notice and felt like I probably didn’t do enough because I didn’t get a finish. If I don’t get a finish, it kind of feels like a loss even if I win. So I was just trying to figure out what I did and didn’t do. You can’t really break it down right there — I was just disappointed.”
The confusion only added to the emotional rollercoaster.
“I was like, man, I don’t know what the f—k is going on,” Fortune continued. “I was in my head. When they told me to come back to the cage, I thought maybe they got it wrong. Somebody told me I won all three rounds and I kind of just ignored him and kept walking. Then they were like, ‘Yo, you’ve got to go back,’ and I was like, ‘Oh s—t.’ I was just in my head too much.”
Fortune admitted he felt confident about the opening round but wasn’t sure how the judges would score the final two frames — which only added to his uncertainty when the incorrect announcement was made.
In the end, the former Bellator standout got his hand raised — and that’s what matters most.
With the win, Fortune extends his streak to four straight victories and is expected to break into the Top 10 of the Heavyweight rankings next week.
