Again this spring, The City of Calgary is offering complimentary compost for residents to use in their yards and gardens. The compost is made from the food scraps and yard waste collected through the Green Cart program.   

Where can I pick up compost? 

Compost is available for pickup from April 13 to May 30, by appointment only, at Shepard (South) and Spyhill (North) landfills. Please note you MUST make an appointment to receive compost. 

Online booking starts on March 31. Compost pick-up appointments will be released in the following time slots: 

April 13 – May 2 appointments: available to book starting March 31.May 4 – 16 appointments: available to book starting April 28.May 18 – 30 appointments: available to book starting May 12.  

To ensure fairness for all Calgarians, households may only pick up compost once during the 2026 Compost Giveaway, and are limited to just 100L. Please remember to bring a shovel, gloves, containers and tarps when picking up the compost.

How to use the compost 

A little compost goes a long way. Compost is used to enhance soil and can help improve the health of lawns, flower beds and gardens. Compost must be used in conjunction with soil and cannot be used as a replacement for soil.
