Catholic education and school choice were front and centre at a recent provincial event in Edmonton, with representatives from the Lakeland region in attendance.

Bonnyville–Cold Lake–St. Paul MLA Scott Cyr attended the Alberta Catholic School Trustees’ Association (ACSTA) MLA Reception, describing it as an opportunity to connect with educators and ensure the region’s voice is part of broader conversations around education in Alberta.

“Events like this help strengthen relationships and ensure our region’s voice is part of those discussions,” Cyr said.

Focus on Catholic education and school choice

Education Minister Demetrios Nicolaides addressed attendees, speaking to the role Catholic education plays within Alberta’s school system.

According to Cyr, the minister emphasized the importance of faith-based learning in shaping not only academic outcomes but also student character and community values.

“His remarks reflected a strong understanding of the value of faith-based learning… in building character, responsibility, and community,” Cyr said.

Support for education choice, including Catholic schooling, was highlighted as an ongoing priority at the provincial level.

Lakeland Catholic leadership in attendance

The Lakeland region was represented by members of the Lakeland Catholic School Division, including:

Board Chair Anna Brockhoff
Trustee Vince MacDonald
Trustee Jean-Marc Michaud

Cyr said their presence reflects the region’s active role in provincial discussions around education.

“It was great to have our region so well represented… contributing to conversations that shape education across Alberta,” he said.

Emphasis on collaboration

The event also focused on collaboration between elected officials and school boards, particularly when it comes to advocating for resources and supports for students.

“Working together with our school boards in joint advocacy efforts is a win for our local children,” Cyr said.

He added that coordinated efforts help ensure communities receive the support they need to maintain strong local schools.

Role of faith in education

Cyr also pointed to the timing of the event near the end of Lent, noting the connection between Catholic education and broader values such as service, sacrifice and personal growth.

“Catholic education plays an important role in guiding students not only academically, but also in developing strong values and character,” he said.

Provincial support highlighted

The reception included participation from several provincial ministers, including Nicolaides, Infrastructure Minister Martin Long and Advanced Education Minister Myles McDougall.

Cyr said continued provincial engagement is key to maintaining strong Catholic education systems across Alberta, including in the Lakeland.

The event underscored the ongoing role of faith-based education in the province — and the importance of ensuring rural regions remain part of that conversation.
