A fraud investigation that began last fall has seen an Ontario resident lose $500,000.
Wellington County OPP say the victim, a resident of Puslinch Township, reported the incident in October and after a lengthy investigation, police on March 27 raided a home in Brampton where a large sum of Canadian currency, high-end clothing and purses, several electronic devices and personal documents.
As a result of the investigation, Basit Balogun, a 29-year-old from Brampton, is charged under the Criminal Code with:
Laundering proceeds of crime – did use – commission in Canada
Possession of proceeds of property obtained by crime over $5,000
Fraud over $5,000
The accused was held in police custody pending a bail hearing before the Ontario Court of Justice in Guelph.
