Close to 100 junior golfers hit the Canal Course at Northview Golf and Country Club in Surrey for the MJT FCG World Golf Championship Qualifier, March 27-28.

The two-day tournament marked the first of six national stops on the MJT ZEAL Series, showcasing some of Canada’s top young golfers in six divisions.

Winners received a pair of Zeal sunglasses, thanks to sponsorship from the eyewear company.

Players in the waitlisted field also battled for exemptions into other events including the International Junior Masters, MJT East Coast Junior Championship, Junior Americas Cup/Team BC and NextGen Pacific Championship.

Two playoffs were played, and some hot scores were recorded by the teens and preteens.

Three Surrey-based golfers finished with top-3 scores including Jeheon Jung (third, MJT Junior Boys), Sarah Kim (second, MJT Girls) and Ziping Chen (second in MJT Bantam Boys, also qualified for FCG World Championship).

The MJT Girls 15-19 division required an extra hole, where Langley’s Esther Cheon faced Surrey’s Sarah Kim, 16, after both players finished tied at 148 (75, 73). Cheon won with a birdie.

One of the tournament’s more dramatic finishes came in the MJT Juvenile Boys division, where Luca Marengo, 16, of Calgary, prevailed in a four-way playoff after all competitors finished tied at 141.

Coquitlam’s Eden Kim, 17, won the MJT Junior Boys division after firing rounds of 73 and a red-hot 65 (138). His 36-hole total was fueled by 13 birdies.

The PLYR Closest to the Pin contest saw Surrey’s Victoria Shen (Hazelmere Golf and Tennis Club) win the U15 Girls division, while Surrey’s Abigail Fu won the Bomber Long Drive contest among 15-19 Girls. A Booster Juice BounceBack Award went to Surrey’s Ding-Yu Lee among Peewee Boys.

Next up in B.C. is the MJT Junior Worlds Qualifier, presented by RINK Golf Academy, at Morgan Creek Golf Course in South Surrey, April 4-5. Visit maplejt.com for details and results.
