Kelowna is expected to reap the financial benefits of hosting a pair of CFL games this summer.
Touchdown Kelowna will see the BC Lions play a pair of home games at the Apple Bowl this summer combined with a 10-day fan festival and other family-friendly community events.
Around 35,000 fans from around the Okanagan and beyond are expected to take in the action as the Lions take on the Calgary Stampeders on Saturday, June 27, and Edmonton Elks on Saturday, July 4.
The Government of BC announced today that it will provide $1 million to support the temporary expansion of the Apple Bowl and events related to Touchdown Kelowna.
According to the Province, the estimated economic benefit of Touchdown Kelowna is $60 million.
“Touchdown Kelowna will be an incredible moment for our community,” said Kelowna Mayor Tom Dyas. “The festival will bring people together and create lasting memories for families and fans throughout Kelowna.”
BC Lions president Duane Vienneau shares the mayor’s excitement and says that Touchdown Kelowna further validates the CFL club’s status as BC’s team.
“The support is reflective of the commitment from everybody in our organization in making this special event come to fruition, and we could not have made this happen without their support,” he noted.
Even with the games three months away, fans have shown that support by selling out tickets for the expanded grandstands at the Apple Bowl.
