Museum of Surrey to host annual Indigenous arts, crafts, culture festival in May

The Museum of Surrey will host its annual Indigenous culture fair in May again.
The Cloverdale museum is inviting the public to a celebrate “Indigenous creativity, culture, and community” at their annual festival called Cedar, Sage & Sweetgrass.
Organizers will welcome Indigenous artists and performers from across B.C. on Saturday, May 2.
“We are so happy to be at the Museum of Surrey once again,” Maryanne Landrie, co-founder of Cedar, Sage and Sweetgrass, said in a press release. “This event is a celebration of Indigenous creativity and culture, with artists sharing our best work with the community.”
New this year will be a “one‑of‑a‑kind” Indigenous fashion show. The show will feature both both traditional and contemporary designs.
According to the release, “Alongside the runway, visitors can explore a marketplace of Indigenous vendors offering handcrafted art, fashion, and jewelry from artists across British Columbia.”
This year’s market vendors include Sandra Murray, Pat Calihou, Kelly Poitras, Aleasha Poetker, Lynne Barisoff and many more.
Cedar Sage and Sweetgrass is an Indigenous art collective founded by Landrie and Pat Calihou. Created several years ago, the group seeks to “highlight the talents of Indigenous artists and storytellers” in communities across the province.
“Each spring we are excited to host Cedar, Sage & Sweetgrass,” said Lynn Saffery, manager of the Cloverdale museum. “This all-ages event showcases amazing Indigenous artists, designers, and performers.”
The festival will feature Indigenous music, dance, food, art, and artisan vendors. And festival-goers will also be able to meet the artists and performers.
In addition to the artisan market, attendees will enjoy live performances.
The one-day fest will run from 12 – 5 p.m. at the Museum of Surrey.
The Museum of Surrey is located at 17710 56A Avenue in Cloverdale. Entrance is free.
