ian Bussiere and a fellow cyclist Chris Owen at an indoor cycling event at Lakeridge Health Oshawa to drum up support for the Ride for the ‘Ridge event in May

The spirit of community generosity rolled into Lakeridge Health Oshawa Thursday after a long-time volunteer and ‘community champion’ completed a live cycling challenge to promote the RBC Ride for the ‘Ridge in support of the region’s five hospitals.

Brian Bussiere, R.S. McLaughlin Durham Regional Cancer Centre volunteer and member of the Lakeridge Health board, completed a challenging indoor route on a stationary bike  – alsong with several other cyclists – in the hospital lobby while raising awareness for the upcoming cycling event at Ajax Downs racetrack on May 24.

Bussiere has a personal connection to Lakeridge Health and a passion for giving back, prompting his indoor ride to drum up support for the charity ride.

“As a volunteer for the past seven years, I have had the privilege of seeing and experiencing all the amazing things being done in Durham Region at Lakeridge Health to ensure that we can provide our community with the best health care possible,” he said.

Staff, patients, and visitors stopped by, cheered on the riders and learned more about how they can participate in the Ride for the ’Ridge.

Bussiere will be riding the 100-km route next month at the event, which hopes to raise $400,000 in support of health care initiatives in Durham Region.

“I’ll be riding … to showcase my commitment to Lakeridge Health and all those that avail themselves of the amazing services provided by our doctors, nurses and entire clinical and non-clinical staff in cancer care, mental health and addictions and so many more areas.”

In partnership with the four fundraising foundations of Lakeridge Health, Durham Region’s premiere cycling event brings together riders of all ages and abilities to fund new state-of-the-art equipment, capital needs like renovations and clinic upgrades, educational opportunities and research initiatives for the entire Lakeridge Health hospital system.
