A significant round of heavy rain is expected to move into the region this weekend, bringing widespread soaking conditions and the potential for localized flooding.

Areas expected to be impacted include Toronto, Mississauga, Brampton, Durham Region, Halton Region and Hamilton, along with much of southern Ontario.

According to forecasters, total rainfall amounts of 25 to 50 mm are expected from Saturday into Saturday night, with the heaviest downpours likely arriving later in the day.

The system responsible is a Colorado low, a powerful weather pattern known for bringing widespread precipitation and unsettled conditions across central and eastern Canada.

Heaviest rain expected Saturday night

Rain is expected to begin during the day on Saturday, but conditions are forecast to worsen into the evening and overnight hours. Periods of intense rainfall, possibly enhanced by embedded thunderstorms, could lead to locally higher totals in some areas.

Meteorologists note there is still some uncertainty around where the most significant rainfall will fall, but much of southern Ontario remains under the threat of soaking rain.

Flooding and visibility concerns

With rainfall rates potentially increasing Saturday night, there is a risk of:

Localized flooding in low-lying areas
Ponding on roads and highways
Reduced visibility for drivers during heavier downpours

Drivers are being urged to use caution, especially during periods of intense rain.

More warnings possible

Officials say rainfall warnings may be issued as the system approaches and forecast confidence increases.

Residents across the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area and surrounding regions are advised to monitor forecasts and prepare for wet and potentially disruptive conditions heading into the weekend.
