Environment Canada is warning that significant rainfall could soak Toronto this weekend, with up to 40 millimetres expected.

The national weather agency says the ground “may have little ability” to absorb further moisture due to recent rainfall, noting that an increased likelihood of pooling on roads is possible.

In the warning issued Saturday, officials say “heavy rain this weekend” will bring totals of 20 to 40 mm with the heaviest downpours expected this evening.

Forecasters say the system could intensify at times, noting that locally higher amounts are possible in thunderstorms.

Drivers may face hazardous conditions as “visibility will likely be suddenly reduced at times,” the agency said.

Residents are being urged to “avoid low-lying areas” and to “watch for washouts near rivers, creeks and culverts,” particularly during periods of heavier rainfall.

The system is expected to move through by late tonight, though lingering impacts could depend on how much rain falls during peak periods.
