A soaking storm is now moving into the region, bringing steady rainfall and an increased risk of localized flooding through today and tonight.

Areas expected to be impacted include Toronto, Mississauga, Brampton, Durham Region, Halton Region, Hamilton, Barrie, Waterloo and London, along with much of southern Ontario.

Forecasters say 20 to 40 mm of rain is expected, with the heaviest downpours likely arriving this evening and continuing overnight. The system is being driven by a Colorado low, known for producing widespread precipitation across the province.

Ground already saturated

One of the biggest concerns with this system is that the ground may already have a limited ability to absorb more water due to recent rainfall events.

That raises the risk of:

Water pooling on roads
Localized flooding in low-lying areas
Rapid runoff near rivers, creeks and culverts

Travel conditions expected to worsen

Drivers should be prepared for sudden reductions in visibility, especially during heavier bursts of rain or thunderstorms later today.

Officials warn that road conditions could deteriorate quickly, particularly in areas prone to flooding.

Safety reminders

Residents are being urged to:

Avoid low-lying or flood-prone areas
Watch for possible washouts near waterways
Use caution while driving in heavy rain

For updated flood information, residents can check with their local conservation authority or the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources.

Heaviest rain tonight

While rain will begin earlier in the day, the most intense period is expected this evening into tonight, when thunderstorms could push rainfall totals even higher in some areas.

Latest information is still coming in as this system develops, and additional updates or warnings may follow.
