With Season 3 of “Shrinking” nearing its finale, co-creator Bill Lawrence is already setting expectations for what comes next. The showrunner revealed that the upcoming fourth season will mark a creative reset, introducing a fresh narrative while keeping the ensemble cast intact.
Lawrence explained that the series was originally designed around a three-season arc focusing on grief, forgiveness and moving forward. With that narrative now reaching its planned conclusion, the creative team is preparing to pivot. He described the upcoming season as “risky” and exciting, emphasizing that the shift will allow the series to explore a new direction for its characters rather than continuing the existing emotional storylines.
Season finale and end of this three season story next week. Hope you dig it.
(Excited to start completely new story next year. Feels scary/risky/fun)

He expanded on that idea in a follow-up reply to a fan, explaining: “We always pitched a three season story on #Shrinking grief-forgiveness-moving forward. We wanted to stay true to that and end the way we planned. (So excited to do Season 4 and a new story with the same cast.)”
The comedy-drama, which streams on Apple TV+, stars Jason Segel as therapist Jimmy Laird, a grieving widower navigating personal loss while attempting to rebuild his relationship with his daughter. Harrison Ford co-stars as his mentor, Dr. Paul Rhoades. The ensemble also includes Christa Miller, Jessica Williams, Luke Tennie, Michael Urie, Lukita Maxwell and Ted McGinley.
Segel, Ford, Williams and Urie have all received Emmy nominations for their work on the series, with Segel and Ford also earning Golden Globe nods. “Shrinking” was nominated for Outstanding Comedy Series at the 2025 Emmy Awards. Apple TV+ renewed the series for a fourth season earlier this year, ahead of its Season 3 premiere in January.
The Season 3 finale of “Shrinking” is set to air on April 8.
