A Texan who transitioned his career from aeronautical engineering to music is including Summerland on his latest tour.
Mark Winters has a degree in Aerospace, Aeronautical, and Astronautical Engineering, and previously worked in the field. But he’s an explorer who likes to feel how scientific equations apply to reality – so he enjoys activities like surfing, motorcycling, rollerblading, snowboarding.
“I was enjoying my life, had a good thing going,” Winters told The Herald.
After he eventually decided to explore the world of music, he realized that was where he wanted to apply his professional energy.
“Music was the first thing that I really picked up and loved more than engineering,” he said.
“It was a way to marry the two halves of my brain: the poet in me, the scientist in me. It’s just super rewarding.”
Winters realized music has the ability to connect him with people on another level.
“In 2022 started phasing out the other things I was doing in my life, and last year was first full year as a professional musician.”
Studying engineering creates a mindset that is well suited to step into other fields, he said.
“That fundamental ability to break something down and understand it.”
Getting the hang of each instrument was the easy part, since their mechanics are so predictable. But learning how to master his voice was one element engineering couldn’t prepare him for.
“Using your body as an instrument, it’s a journey you have to go on to learn and explore. Everything was easy except that.”
Winters’ music is melodic with lyrics that focus on positivity and nerdy science references. Hear him out on Spotify or YouTube. Or better yet, experience his Good Vibes Highway Tour at Detonate Brewing at 103-9503 Cedar Ave. on Tuesday, April 7. Show starts at 7:30 p.m.
