Vancouver’s Sophie Jaques ended Boston Fleet’s goalie Aerin Frankel’s shutout streak of 236 minutes and 45 seconds on Tuesday night, April 7. However, despite this goal, the Goldeneyes lost to the Fleet 5-1.
The Vancouver Goldeneyes played the Boston Fleet in Edmonton’s Rogers Place in front of 10,794 people. The game was the final stop in the 16-game PWHL Takeover Tour. The Goldeneyes played five Takeover Tour games this season.
Just under eight minutes into the first period, Jessie Eldridge scored a goal on Emerance Maschmeyer, but the goal was overturned due to goalie interference. She responded again thirty seconds later and secured a goal for the Fleet.
Eldridge scored again in the second period on a power play. Megan Keller, Jessie Eldridge, and Susanna Tapani also scored for the Fleet.
Boston goalie Aerin Frankel saved 28 of 29 shots. She became the first goalie in PWHL history to win 17 games in a single season. The previous record was held by Goldeneyes goalie Kristen Campbell during the inaugural season when she played for Toronto.
Emerance Maschmeyer started the game for Vancouver and saved 18 of 23 shots on net during the first two periods. Kristen Campbell played in the net for the final period and saved six of six shots.
Between the second and third period, the Goldeneyes took time to regroup, said captain Ashton Bell.
“We knew we weren’t proud of our first two periods, but we wanted to come out in the third and win the period. We did that, and we produced some offence as well. We made the shots even. But we definitely need to find a way to have a full 60-minute game.”
Vancouver Head Coach Brian Idalski also felt the team performed better in the third period.
“The third period was positive. We started it the right way, managed pucks way better, got some opportunities and chances. I was happy with the fact that we played the third period a little bit more indicative of what we’re capable of,” he said.
Vancouver heads home after a 19-day road trip and plays at the Pacific Coliseum next Tuesday (April 14) against the Seattle Torrent.
Vancouver currently sits in 7th place in the league with 27 points.
