Thousands of residents were left without power Thursday afternoon after a fire broke out in a field near St-Bruno St. in St-Hubert on Montreal’s South Shore.
Firefighters were dispatched to Joseph-Daigneault St, according to the Longueuil fire department in a post on Facebook at around 4:15 p.m. that warned the situation could escalate as crews battled the blaze. Residents were urged to avoid the area.
Footage circulating on social media showed thick plumes of smoke and flames spreading across grass in the field.

The fire is believed to have started in a wooded area at the corner of Gaétan-Boucher Blvd. and Joseph-Daigneault St., according to Le Journal de Montréal.
The cause remained unknown Thursday evening.
The fire was still burning around 6 p.m. Joseph-Daigneault St. was closed as emergency crews worked at the scene. By 7 p.m., the fire was not out but was considered under control.
More than 9000 addresses in the Brossard area and St-Bruno-de-Montarville were without power into the evening, according to Hydro-Québec’s website.
