Getting into and out of Mississauga Hospital is expected to take a bit longer the next two months due to ramped-up construction of the Hazel McCallion light-rail transit line, hospital officials say.

Metrolinx, the provincial agency in charge of the $4.6-billion Mississauga-to-Brampton LRT project, is doing track work at the Hurontario Street/Bronte College Court intersection, just south of The Queensway, during April and May.

That area is a main access route to the hospital, which is also undergoing massive construction as the new Mississauga Hospital is being built over the next seven or so years.

Trillium Health Partners, which oversees Mississauga’s two hospitals, said patients, their families and hospital staff entering and leaving the hospital should plan ahead in the coming weeks and expect delays.

“As part of this work, access to the hospital’s parking garage from Bronte College Court has temporarily changed during April and May and drivers should expect delays, particularly during peak hours,” hospital officials said in an email to INsauga.com.

Trillium Health Partners said the community also needs to know the following:

Allow extra time to get to appointments, hospital visits or work shifts.
Access to the parking garage from Bronte College Court has changed, with restricted left turns and a designated detour route (see map below).
Traffic patterns may continue to shift through April and May as construction progresses.
Site ambassadors are available on-site to offer support with wayfinding and answering questions.

Work being completed at and near the busy intersection at Hurontario Street and Bronte College Court/Sherobee Road may also lead to more noise the next couple of months in addition to traffic delays on the major street, Metrolinx said in an update last week.

What will eventually be the largest hospital in Canada, The Peter Gilgan Mississauga Hospital, is being built at the southwest corner of Hurontario Street and The Queensway.

Metrolinx said its work at the intersection of Hurontario Street and Bronte College Court/Sherobee Road will continue until May 26 at 10 p.m.

“Crews will be welding tracks and doing concrete work for guideway installations within the intersection of Hurontario Street and Bronte College Court/Sherobee Road (just south of The Queensway),” the agency said in its recent update. “Work at this intersection will take place in two phases to help reduce impacts to the community and Trillium Health Partners. Additional lane closures will be in place during this time for utility work.”

The work is being completed in two phases. During the first phase:

Crews will begin work on the south side of the intersection.
Left turns at the intersection will be restricted.
Westbound traffic on Sherobee Road and Bronte College Court will remain open.
Detours will be in place via North Service Road and Sherobee Road.

During the second phase:

Once the south side is complete, work will move to the north side of the intersection.
Northbound left turns from Hurontario Street to Bronte College Court will be allowed (except for trucks).
Other left turns at the intersection will also be restricted.
Through traffic on Bronte College Court and Sherobee Road will be restricted.
