The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service is about to search for a new chief.
Christian Schmidt, who has led the city’s emergency response department since August 2021, will retire on July 3, the city announced in a Friday press release.
Schmidt started working for the city in 1993. Before being appointed chief, he worked as a paramedic, communications officer, staff inspector, superintendent, assistant platoon chief, assistant chief and deputy chief, the city said.

Winnipeg Mayor Scott Gillingham said in a statement Schmidt led the fire-paramedic service “through a period of real modernization.”
The city said it will search for a new chief but did not specify a timeline for that recruitment effort.
There are few other vacancies among the senior ranks of the city’s public service. The city is still in the process of hiring a new communications director.
