Five years after opening, South Surrey’s newest secondary school has received provincial approval for an addition.
On Thursday, April 9, the provincial government announced funding just outside of Grandview Heights Secondary School for a three-storey, 20-classroom addition.
“As Surrey continues to grow, so does our responsibility to make sure schools grow with it,” said MLA Garry Begg. “Every student deserves the space and support to succeed, and that’s the commitment that we’ve been making in government for many years.”
Begg informs that the government is committing up to $36 million toward this project, which will make room for 500 new students at the school.
“What makes this addition especially exciting is that it was always part of the plan,” said vice-chair of the Surrey School Board of Education Garry Thind.
Thind explained to the audience that Grandview Heights was originally designed with the ability to accommodate a future addition.
Grandview Heights opened in September 2021 and is noted by Surrey Schools as the first new secondary school in South Surrey in nearly 30 years.
Since 2022, Surrey Schools says Grandview Heights has been operating above capacity, with current enrolment totalling 1,838 students – or 22.5 per cent over capacity.
There are currently eight portables on site to accommodate the number of students attending the school.
“Just as importantly, when complete, this addition will reduce the need for the portable classrooms that are currently on site,” shared Thind.
This addition is also expected to include 12 general instruction classrooms, science labs, inclusive education spaces to support students with diverse learning needs, and nine specialty spaces for electives such as science, technology, home economics and fine arts.
“I know I can speak for many of my peers when I say having room to breathe and move and focus on what is in front of you is a critical part of quality learning,” said Grade 12 student Zohra Khawaja. “You are giving this school the resources they need to grow as students and as people and that will always be a worthwhile investment.”
Surrey Schools says construction on the Grandview Heights Secondary addition is anticipated to begin in summer 2027, with a target occupancy date scheduled for fall 2029.
