City officials are taking another look at how to best guide future growth and development in a large waterfront community in Mississauga.

The City of Mississauga says it’s updating its 2014 Clarkson Village Study in an effort to ensure the community in the city’s southwest end moves forward “in a way that helps enhance the community’s village character.”

Officials who’ve been seeking public input on the matter to “shape our work” say they’ll share “early ideas” with the community at another public meeting scheduled for the end of the month.

At that engagement/feedback session, to be held virtually on April 30 from 6-8 p.m., the city says it will present information on:

An updated vision for the village.
Ways to strengthen the village’s main-street character.
How to promote growth with a mix of homes, shops and businesses.
Opportunities for new open spaces where people can gather.

Officials are also seeking ideas from the community “on how to make Clarkson Village more welcoming, vibrant and enjoyable for everyone. This could include improvements such as more frequent transit service, additional retail or more diverse housing choices.”

City officials say the process began more than a decade ago in 2014 when they completed their initial Clarkson Village Study with “extensive input” from residents and area businesses.

“Working together, the community helped create a comprehensive vision for the revitalization of the area. That vision resulted in a set of planning policies (urban design guidelines, official plan policies and zoning changes) that remain in place today,” the city said in an online update this week.

Could taller buildings be part of the plan?

“After more than 10 years, it’s time to review the planning policies we put in place for Clarkson Village,” officials continued. “We want to understand what’s working well and areas where improvements may be required. Are there opportunities to bring more housing to the area that we should consider? Do we need to do things differently to encourage a more vibrant, pedestrian-friendly main street?”

Officials added their update of the study will look at opportunities for:

Fostering a complete community by providing residents with places to walk to shops and other services.
Maintaining Lakeshore Road West as a vibrant main street for commercial activity.
Providing more housing and mixed-use buildings that combine residential and commercial spaces, including exploring appropriate locations for taller buildings.

The city said it wants to hear once again from residents, businesses, community groups and other interested parties to “understand opportunities and constraints” prior to forging ahead with an update of the plan for the Clarkson area.

“When complete, the Clarkson Village Study will result in updated urban design guidelines and amendments to the Official Plan and Zoning Bylaw that supports growth and enhances Clarkson Village’s main street and rich heritage,” the city noted in its update.

Those interested in taking part in the upcoming virtual public meeting must register in advance.

Another major initiative involves transit in Clarkson area

The Clarkson Village Study update is moving forward in conjunction with another initiative in that part of the city — the Clarkson Transit Station Area Study.

That “transformational project” is also anticipated to forever change one of Mississauga’s oldest communities, the city said earlier.

Essentially, it’s a City of Mississauga-led effort in which officials are preparing a master plan for the area surrounding Clarkson GO station in order to guide future development in the southwest Mississauga community.

The sweeping plan identifies:

Ways to build a complete community with residential and employment uses, a main street, parks and public spaces.
Locations for new homes and appropriate buildings, heights and density around transit.
Enhancements for pedestrian, cycling, road and transit connections.
