We have safely resolved an incident that occurred this afternoon at Mount Royal University.
At approximately 2:45 p.m., today, Monday, April 13, 2026, we responded to a report of an individual carrying a large knife at Mount Royal University (MRU), located at 4825 Mount Royal Gate S.W. Police contained the area and after confirming the witness reports, a shelter in place order was issued for the university and surrounding communities.
While in the process of clearing the scene, officers received information that the individual was a staff member working as a chef for the university. After verifying this information, the shelter in place was lifted.
“This incident highlights how seriously we treat reports of potential threats. Our officers responded quickly to ensure the safety of the campus and surrounding community,” says Insp. Darren Smith of the CPS Real Time Operations Centre. “Although we now know the public was not in danger, our officers are well trained for these situations.
This investigation ongoing and charges may be laid. One man was taken into custody from the scene.
We appreciate the cooperation of Mount Royal University staff and the public while the situation was resolved.
