Surrey council approved more than $4.2 million in public works contracts on Monday, with a collective spending limit set at $5.2 million.

First up was a $868,079.10 contract for Sutton Road Marking Ltd. for pavement marking services.

Surrey’s general manager of engineering Scott Neuman said in a corporate report before council that this annual pavement marking services contract provides labour, material and equipment for pavement markings throughout Surrey “including centre lines, lane lines, cycle lanes, crosswalks, stop bars, symbols, and other markings required for safe and efficient movement of vehicles and pedestrians.”

The work is expected to be done by November.

Next up, council approved increasing the spending limit by $1,727,250 – to $1,974,000 from $246,750 – for Maple Leaf Modular to supply and install up to eight outdoor public washrooms at a unit cost of $246,750.

Each facility will include two “single-user” washroom compartments, one of which will be a fully accessible universal washroom, and a mechanical/janitorial room, to be made out of “industrial grade, vandal-resistant materials.”

Councillor Gordon Hepner called them great improvements to Surrey’s parks. “I know there’s a lot of residents that approached me and other council members for these type of amenities.”

“Yes indeed they are welcome,” Mayor Brenda Locke added.

Council also approved a $1,651,363.41 contract for Professional Mechanical Ltd. for a mechanical heat pump and boiler replacement project for the Cloverdale Recreation Centre, as well as a $239,919.75 contract for PCL Constructors Westcoast Inc. for pre-construction services related to phase one of the Centre Block development downtown.
