A celebration of active living for older adults is planned at South Surrey Recreation and Arts Centre on Saturday, April 25, from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
The Play for Life 55+ Sport and Wellness Event will involve free sport “try it” sessions throughout the day, to allow people to explore new activities including walking soccer, badminton, carpet bowling, table tennis, boccia, ability circuit by Move for Life and chess.
The goal is to help adults 55+ stay active, support those already in sports and learn more to keep participating as they age, with free refreshments, light lunch and door prizes.

The free event is backed by BC 55+ Seniors Games Society, to bring the 55+ BC Games to Surrey in September 2027, along with Play for Life (Move for Life) and Pacific Sport.
Educational sessions will feature guest speakers and panelists on the social and health benefits of staying active. Among them are Drew Mitchell (CEO Sport for Life), Charmaine Crooks (Olympian), Dr. Giulia Coletta (Active Aging Research Team), Diane Murphy (president of BC Seniors Games Society), Dr. Jeff Purkis (sports injury prevention), Dr. James Mckendry (UBC) and Dr. Werner Spangehl (lifestyle medicine).
Meantime, a dozen volunteer board members are needed in Surrey to help organize the 2027 edition of 55+ BC Games, billed as British Columbia’s largest multi-sport event for adults aged 55 and older.
In Kamloops this fall, close to 2,500 competitors are expected in 27 events including three new demonstration sports.
Orientation sessions start in May for the Surrey board, which will get to work this fall in partnership with city staff, community partners and BC Seniors Games Society. Applicants are needed for board vice-president along with directors of administration, medical services, promotions, protocol, transportation, venue operations and other positions listed on surrey.ca.
