Surrey-Newton MLA Jessie Sunner announced her pregnancy on social media this week, saying she’s due to give birth late-summer.
“With full hearts, we’re incredibly grateful and excited to be expecting and to step into this long-awaited next chapter,” Sunner posted on Instagram with an ultrasound photo.
“I remain fully committed to serving as MLA for Surrey-Newton and Minister of Post-Secondary Education and Future Skills with focus, dedication, and care,” she added.
“Strong plans are in place to ensure the ongoing work of my ministry and constituency office during that time, which will continue supporting our community every day with the help of my incredible team.”
Fellow cabinet minister Bowinn Ma (Infrastructure) is also expecting. “Barefoot, pregnant, and in the @BCLegislature where we belong!!” Ma posted on X with a photo of her and Sunner smiling and waving. “Another historic first for BC: Not one, but TWO Cabinet Ministers simultaneously expecting.”
Sunner was first elected in 2024 to help form an NDP government. Before that she worked as a human rights lawyer and trade unionist for the Hospital Employees’ Union. “I went to law school in Calgary and I’ve been a lawyer since 2018,” the Queen Elizabeth Secondary grad said in 2024.
The Now-Leader has reached out to Sunner for comment.
