A man is dead and a woman is critically injured after an SUV collided with a transport truck in Brampton on Tuesday, police say.

The collision happened in the southbound lanes of Airport Road, north of Williams Parkway, according to Peel Regional Police. Officers were called to the area at about 3:15 p.m.

Firefighters and paramedics extricated the man and woman from the SUV. They were the only occupants of the vehicle, police say.

The man, who was the driver, was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after he arrived. The woman was airlifted to a trauma centre, where she remains in life-threatening condition.

“We would like to extend our deepest heartfelt condolences to the victim’s family and all those that are impacted by this tragic incident,” acting Sgt. Mandeep Khatra told reporters near the scene later.

Officers from Peel police’s major collision bureau are investigating the collision.

Khatra said speed may have been a factor based on accounts from witnesses.

The transport truck remained at the scene and the driver is co-operating with investigators, police said in an email Tuesday night.

Anyone who has dashboard camera footage of the collision or video surveillance of the area is urged to contact police.
