With the NHL playoffs set to begin this weekend, Strathmore town council briefly turned its attention to hockey loyalties during a recent meeting.
At the April 8 committee of the whole meeting, Councillor Jim Chisholm asked fellow councillors which teams they would support. Chisholm signalled his own allegiance by wearing a Montreal Canadiens pin beneath his blazer.
Flames fail to clinch playoffs
Mayor Pat Fule said he would not be backing any team after the Calgary Flames failed to secure a playoff spot.
“As soon as the Flames struggled and continued to struggle, I stopped,” said Fule.

Councillor Claude Brown, a former hockey player, said he finds the sport difficult to watch.
“I just get too aggravated,” Brown said with a laugh. “I’m going to cheer for the Oilers.”
A surprising allegiance
Councillor Matt Hyde, a longtime Flames fan, said he could not support Edmonton.
“My allegiance for Canadian teams would certainly be for the Montreal Canadiens, but the team I’m really pulling for is led by a Calgary kid, Cale Makar, so I’ll be pulling for the Colorado Avalanche this year,” he said.
Councillors Richard Wegener and Brent Wiley declined to share their preferred teams. Councillor Melissa Langmaid was absent from the meeting.
