A shopping mall that’s been around for decades in Mississauga’s east end has addressed “safety and security issues” since being sold to a new owner last year, the city councillor for the area says.

Rockwood Mall, well established in the community since it opened in the early 1980s, was sold in 2025 to BGO, a large real estate investment firm that does business around the world. The 300,000-sq.-ft. shopping centre located at Dixie Road and Burnhamthorpe Road East had been privately owned for decades prior to the sale.

City of Mississauga Ward 3 Coun. Chris Fonseca said on Wednesday at city council the mall has cleaned up its act in a noticeable way in the past eight months.

To present its “fresh” look, Rockwood Mall is hosting an open house this Saturday from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. The family friendly event, themed “Fresh start@Rockwood,” also marks Earth Day (observed on April 22) and is open to all members of the community.

Fonseca said there were a lot of “safety and security issues” at the mall that were of concern to the community when the sale went through last August.

Since then, though, BGO has “stepped up and worked not only with myself and the community, but also with” city staff to clean up the mall and put in place procedures to address safety, security and “many different issues,” the councillor told her colleagues on council.

Fonseca added she asked the new mall owners if they’d host an open house to help ease the community’s concerns.

BGO purchased Rockwood Mall from private Ontario-based owner The Sitzer Group, according to multiple media reports in summer 2025. The purchase price, as reported by London, England-based media organization Green Street News, was around $90 million.

BGO has offices in 25 cities in 12 countries around the world.

Founded in 1957, The Sitzer Group is an Ontario-based, privately owned property developer and manager specializing in shopping centres anchored by grocery stores, drug stores and banks, the company noted on its website.
