A big update has been given recently regarding potential Vancouver Canucks trade target Mason McTavish, who remains a restricted free agent as of Sunday evening. As the Vancouver Canucks continue to search for a suitable option for their second line center position, one one name they’ve been linked to in recent weeks is Mason McTavish of the Anaheim Ducks, with their interest in him first reported by Patrick Johnston of The Province.

“Hence their continued interest in Roslovic, as well as their interest in Mason McTavish, the Anaheim Ducks’ restricted free agent. Of course adding McTavish, the third-overall pick in the 2021 draft, will be very hard: he’s a highly-regarded player with huge upside and will cost a big price in trade, perhaps more than the Canucks can afford.” Johnston said.

With training camps across the National Hockey League in roughly five weeks, McTavish remains unsigned and at some point soon, the Anaheim Ducks are going to need to make a big decision – sign him or trade him.

Big update given on potential Vancouver Canucks trade target Mason McTavish

Following last week’s report from Jimmy Murphy of RG.org where a source told him the starting point of a package for Mason McTavish would be a young, right-shot defenseman with top pairing potential, Anthony Di Marco of Daily Faceoff gave an update on the 22-year-old.

In a recent mailbag article for Daily Faceoff, Di Marco was asked if he thinks the Ducks will move on from McTavish before training camp begins and he said that he can’t see a scenario where the centerman is traded by Anaheim, adding that his best guess would be a bridge deal gets signed in the near future.

“I don’t think the Ducks will move McTavish, especially considering the fact that they moved on from Zegras in large part to the former’s long-term role with the club. My best guess is that a bridge deal ultimately gets done, but Verbeek would be best served to make sure things don’t go sideways to the point where the player’s long term future with the club could come into question.” Di Marco said.

Given the potential cost to acquire Mason McTavish and the fact that the Anaheim Ducks don’t necessarily want to move on from him unless they’re forced to, it seems like the odds of him landing Vancouver are almost slim-to-none.

If that’s the case, then Patrik Allvin will need to reevaluate his options in the weeks ahead and perhaps consider upping the team’s offer to current unrestricted free agent Jack Roslovic.
