Momentum for the MIAA Super 8 tournament is real again.

On Thursday, the proposal to bring back the tournament for boys’ and girls’ hockey was approved by the MIAA’s Tournament Management Committee. If passed by the Board of Directors next month, the tournament would resume in the 2027-28 school year. Baseball is also exploring a return, starting as early as next spring.

I covered three Super 8 baseball tournaments at the Boston Globe, and it was consistently the best event on the calendar — a high-stakes, round-robin format featuring the top eight teams in the state, regardless of division.

Which leads to an obvious question: what would a soccer Super 8 look like? And would it even work?

There’s been no evidence of discussions about a soccer Super 8. The current tournament format produces incredible drama and emotions, with no shortage of stirring finishes.

But why not make it even better? Let’s examine how a Super 8 would translate to soccer.
