A Toronto man faces charges in connection with a hit-and-run early last Wednesday morning in Mississauga’s north end that killed a Brampton man as he walked across the street at a major intersection.
Peel Regional Police said officers with the force’s Major Collision Bureau arrested the man on Friday, two days after the 47-year-old pedestrian was struck and left for dead at Hurontario Street and Derry Road.
Officers responded to the call shortly after 3:45 a.m. on April 15. Police said earlier that conditions were “dark and rainy” at the time.
“A dark-coloured SUV travelling westbound on Derry Road struck a male pedestrian within the intersection and fled the scene,” police said in a news release on Monday. “The pedestrian was then struck (again) and dragged a short distance by a second vehicle. The driver of the second vehicle remained at the scene.”
Police subsequently identified the victim as a 47-year-old man from Brampton.
Investigators have located and seized a vehicle believed to have been involved in the deadly collision, police said.
Sergio Dacosta, 61, of Toronto, is charged with failing to stop at the scene of a collision resulting in death.
The investigation continues.
