One person is in hospital in serious condition after a motorcycle collided with a tree in the city’s northwest.
Calgary police asked the public to avoid Valley Springs Road N.W. due to road closures in both directions at Valley Brook Circle N.W. at 3:45 p.m. Monday, more than an hour after the incident.
Sgt. Sean Sherman with the Calgary Police Service said that a male driver in his 40s was riding his dirt bike along the roads in the area “on more than one occasion.” The bike is “believed to be from a household in this area,” he said.
A witness approached the driver and asked him to slow down, according to Sherman.
The driver “did the opposite and was travelling westbound on the road . . . and then lost control of his bike and hit the tree,” he said.
“We are asking (the) public to avoid the area and use alternative routes,” read an update from police.
The driver was taken to hospital with serious, non-life-threatening injuries, but it is unknown if the injuries will be life-altering, Sherman said.
Sherman warned that driving at high speeds is a “huge risk” to the public.
“So if you’re already going high rates of speed and there’s kids that walk through this area and there’s residents who walk through this area, it’s going to be a risk to them because when you’re going that high a speed and you lose control, that’s when bad things can happen,” he said.
