“Disgusting graffiti” left on the outer walls and walkway leading to the main entrance of a high school in the city’s west end on Tuesday made for a “sad morning in Mississauga,” the mayor said.

In denouncing the numerous spray-painted anti-Israel hate messages discovered early in the morning at St. Aloysius Gonzaga Secondary School, Mayor Carolyn Parrish also noted City of Mississauga staff “pulled out all the stops” to quickly wash away the graffiti so there was “no trace of any of it shortly thereafter.”

Peel Regional Police told INsauga.com on Tuesday the force’s Hate Crime Unit is investigating the incident. They said they received a call just before 7:30 a.m. reporting the vandalism at the large building on Erin Centre Boulevard that houses the high school in addition to Erin Meadows Community Centre and Library.

Police said graffiti was spray painted “on the side of the building as well as on the ground near the front entrance of the school.”

One person at the scene described the amount of hate graffiti as “significant” and “extensive.”

They added many people entering and leaving the high school/community centre around the noon hour on Tuesday didn’t appear to be taking much notice of the hate messages.

A woman at the scene told INsauga.com, “this is terrible. They shouldn’t be doing this at a school. (There’s) too much hatred in the world.”

Cleanup crews arrived at the school shortly before noon on Tuesday to begin washing away the spray-painted messages.

No arrests have yet been made, according to police.

Mississauga Ward 9 Coun. Martin Reid, who represents the area, said on Wednesday “everyone worked together” in the wake of the incident — from the Peel police officers who first responded and investigated to school officials and city staff who worked fast to eradicate the graffiti.

“It was all hands on deck,” the councillor said during Wednesday morning’s general committee meeting, adding the graffiti “was down as fast as it was up.”
