An intoxicated man at Grace Hospital had a grenade that was later found to be a non-explosive smoke canister, Winnipeg police say.

The man went into the hospital early Monday and encountered security, who found he had what turned out to be a smoke-screen training grenade, police said in a news release Wednesday.

Officers were then sent to the Grace, around 5:30 a.m. Monday.

The device was later turned over to the Winnipeg police bomb unit, who deemed it non-explosive but active.

Smoke-screen grenades are designed to cloak movement and are of military origin, police said in an email.

Police arrested a 45-year-old man for possession of a firearm, possession of a restricted/prohibited weapon, and two counts of possession of a firearm part or ammunition contrary to a prohibition order.

They are investigating where the grenade came from.
