Janice Tjen beat Alina Charaeva in the first-round of the Madrid Open. The Indonesian was pegged back after going a break up in the first set, though won the final three games to take the lead. Tjen then opened up a 4-0 lead in the second as she sealed a 6-4 6-2 win after one hour and 22 minutes.
Liudmila Samsonova is her next opponent. Samsonova ended a six-match losing run in Stuttgart last week, defeating Antonia Ruzic in her first-round match. She then pushed Coco Gauff in the first set of her next encounter, but Gauff would go on to win comfortably. It’s been a difficult season for Samsonova up to this point, with 10 defeats from 15 matches overall.
She will take some confidence from the previous meeting between the pair, which saw Samsonova cruise to 6-2 6-2 win at the Abu Dhabi Open earlier this year. Tjen has not been entirely convincing this season, and Samsonova will be seeking a second straight win over her opponent.
