Plaza of Honour quarterback Darian Durant is well aware of what it takes to make an impression on football brass and earn an extra look or a spot on a roster. Durant offered this advice to young QBs on the SportsCage.
“Everyone goes in wanting to execute the playbook and be as fundamentally sound as possible. But I like to tell guys you have to take risks.
If you see a one-on-one matchup, even if the play calls for a short throw, you can make a big play. You’ll never fully master a playbook, but if you can show coaches you understand concepts and recognize when it’s time to take a shot and be more aggressive, that stands out.
If you go out there, throw touchdown passes, get the crowd excited and show big-play ability, you give yourself a better chance of making the team. But if you’re robotic and just taking the simple five-yard throw, you could be two-and-out. You might not get the extra reps you need to prove you belong.
So take a risk from time to time, within the structure of the offence, and show coaches you can make big plays. That will give you a better chance.”
