Ottawa police have charged a 30-year-old man with second-degree murder and attempted murder in a Barrhaven incident that left one woman dead and another injured Thursday.
Police said officers were called to Ashbourne Crescent, a residential street near the intersection of Cambrian Road and Longfields Drive, at around 9:45 p.m.
A paramedic spokesperson said Friday morning that a woman with traumatic injuries was pronounced dead at the scene and an older woman who also had traumatic injuries was taken to hospital in serious, stable condition.
One of the police units investigating told CBC News the woman killed was the mother of the accused and the injured woman is his grandmother. The women, aged 60 and the other in her 80s, were both stabbed, investigators say.
According to police, the accused went to the hospital in Hawkesbury, east of Ottawa, and said he had killed two people at that Ashbourne Crescent address.
On Friday afternoon, police announced the man has been charged with second-degree murder and attempted murder.
Friends and family have not all been notified, police said, so they are not releasing the names of people involved.
The accused is expected to appear in court on Friday afternoon.
