Grief descended on a family from Ahmedgarh, after being informed about the sudden and mysterious death of their only daughter, Pratibha Gupta (29), settled in Brampton, Canada.

Rakesh Kumar Sharma, a social activist of Ahmedgarh, said Sanjiv Kumar Jindal and his wife Indu Jindal are yet to comprehend the circumstances under which they lost their daughter.

Apparently bearing no injuries, her body was found lying near the stairway of the house she was living in on rent. Though some members of the landlord’s family were present in the house, the victim did not receive any help as the owner was in the United States.

Several calls made by the parents to Pratibha’s number went unanswered, after which they informed her employer, who sought intervention of the Canadian police in the matter.

Though the Canadian police are yet to reach any conclusion, the aggrieved family said some officers had inquired about the routine of the deceased and sought any other relevant information.

“Both Sanjiv and Indu were happy during the daytime on Saturday as Pratibha was in high spirits during a routine telephone call before she went to sleep.

They became upset when their evening call went unanswered,” said Sharma, maintaining that later enquiries turned disastrous for the family.

The deceased had moved to Canada on a work permit, 3.5 years ago, and was working with a private transport company in Brampton. She was an M.Sc. in Mathematics and was a teacher before shifting abroad.

The family is in the process of transporting their late daughter back to Punjab.

Pratibha was yet to receive a PR status in Canada.

The family was informed that the Brampton police had initiated a probe into the sequence of events leading to Pratibha’s demise. CCTV footage is being analysed and statements of eyewitnesses are being recorded. The exact cause of death will be ascertained after the post-mortem.

Fatehgarh Sahib MP Amar Singh Boparai said he had already initiated a process to seek intervention of the Ministry of External Affairs to expedite the process of bringing the body of the deceased to Punjab.
