One person has died and four others taken to hospital after a crash in East Gwillimbury, Ont., roughly 50 kilometres north of Toronto.
Officers responded to a a single vehicle crash neat Doane Road and Leslie Street around 12:30 a.m. Sunday, said York Regional Police Const. James Dickson at the scene.
He said a vehicle that was travelling westbound on Doane Road “had left the road and gone down an embankment” into a pond.
First responders had to coordinate to get down the hill to reach the vehicle and provide life-saving efforts to people inside, said Dickson.
However, he said, one person was pronounced dead at the scene.
The four other people in the vehicle were taken to hospital with three in life-threatening condition and one with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries, said Dickson.

Leslie Street is closed from Jeffery Crescent to Seaview Heights as the major collision investigation unit is at the scene. Dickson said the street will be closed for the “foreseeable future.”
He urged any witnesses or anyone with information to call police.
“We understand a collision like this is deeply concerning for the community,” said Dickson.
“It’s not that big of a community and we know this is going to have an impact on many people in the area.”
