PHOTOS: First Nations firefighters help knock out Harrison Mills wildfire

The Sts’ailes Fire Department (SFD) and B.C. Wildfire Service (BCWS) quickly knocked down a wildfire burning in the Harrison Mills area this past weekend.
According to a report from the SFD, the fire started behind a residence on the north end of School and began to spread. Crews set up at Xepay Road to the north, holding the fire at bay until the BCWS arrived to help battle the blaze.
The wildfire is currently listed as under control, which means it is unlikely to spread beyond its current boundaries. “Under Control” is the final stage before the fire is classified as out.
The SFD said they did everything they could with the equipment they had, but the School Road.
“Situations like this highlight some of the challenges we face like limited hose length made it difficult to get close to the fire, and having additional nozzles would have allowed more members to actively respond,” the SFD stated on social media. “We’re proud of the work our team did to help protect the area, but we also recognize the importance of having the right equipment when it matters most.”
The SFD thanked community members for setting up a cooling station for firefighters and for dropping off food, water and sports drinks to help the firefighters.
“That kind of support means everything to us during calls like this,” the SFD stated.
The SFD is currently hosting a 50/50 fundraiser to help raise funds for updated and additional equipment; the draw date is Friday, May 1. Tickets are one for $5, three for $10 and 10 for $20. The School Road fire is actually the second wildfire of the year in Agassiz-Harrison, the first being in the Chehalis River area on April 9. The Chehalis River Fire spanned only 0.5 hectares and burned from April 9 to April 15.
Both fires were classified as human-caused. In contrast to the two April wildfires this year, wildfires were not recorded in Agassiz-Harrison until late May last year.
