Surrey council awards $9M contract for Newton Community Centre design, pre-construction

Surrey council has approved a $9,091,325.60 contract for Ventana Construction Corporation for design and pre-construction services related to the Newton Community Centre.
The spending limit is set at $10,100,000.
“Staff will explore opportunities with Ventana to advance design work and move the project forward as quickly as feasibly possible,” city manager Rob Constanzo indicates in a corporate report that came before council on Monday, April 27. The centre is expected to be ready for use in the Spring of 2030.
The Newton Community Centre, Costanzo notes, will be a “comprehensive community hub offering inclusive recreational, cultural, and educational amenities for residents of all ages.”
It will feature a 50-metre lap pool, a leisure pool, a hot tub and sauna, a library branch, two gymnasiums, a fitness centre and a mat room, as well as multi-purpose rooms, childcare and arts areas.
Costanzo said site servicing is already underway with local roads being constructed, including a 70 Avenue extension between King George and 136B Street.
“That work is expected to be completed this summer,” he told council. “The contractor will be on site in about four weeks’ time with early site prep and around the end of August they’ll be commencing excavation so the intent is to work as quickly as possible to bring this project to fruition.”
Council heard that Ventana is also completing the third sheet of the Cloverdale Sport & Ice Complex.
Councillor Mandeep Nagra weighed in.
“I still believe that old Rona site was the perfect location for the Newton rec centre, but you know, I don’t want to delay this any further. I think Newton needs its rec centre, it’s already very late so I will support this moving forward.”
Mayor Brenda Locke said she’s “thrilled” to see this moving forward. “It’s going to be a wonderful community centre.”
