Surrey musician helps stage ‘Glitch,’ a play set inside giant cellphone

Surrey resident Sophie Labrie is back as music mentor and musician for Some Assembly Theatre Company’s 26th-anniversary production of Glitch, a new play created by Valerie Methot in collaboration with Vancouver-area youth and artists.
Glitch is advertised as “a bold new work” inspired by concerns about societal expectations, anxiety and phone addiction among youth.
The show, written and directed by Methot, is staged May 6-9 at Roundhouse Performance Centre in Vancouver, tickets on someassembly.ca.
The artistic process to create Glitch involved more than 170 professional artists, diverse youth, educators and health care workers.
Surrey’s Labrie is a longtime collaborator in Some Assembly theatre productions dating back to 2011 when she joined Roundhouse Youth Theatre Action Group as a youth writer and performer. Four years later she performed and co-wrote Webs We Weave as an 18-year-old living in Whalley.
She’s now a singer, songwriter, writer, director and actor. Labrie attended Sarah McLachlan School of Music, graduated from Vancouver Academy of Dramatic Arts and recently wrote and directed two short films, A Story about Love and Wildflowers.
In Glitch, youth are pulled inside a giant cell phone — “an absurd and terrifying world of information overload, competition, and unrealistic expectations,” a bio says. “Met with the lure of trendy apps, a psychosocial battle for the highest number of human users escalates. Can the humans break free of the vicious cycle?”
