The Saskatchewan Roughriders selected defensive back Malcolm Bell in the first round of the CFL’s Canadian Draft on Tuesday.
The 6-foot-1, 191-pounder was chosen ninth overall by the reigning Grey Cup champions.
Bell, from Montreal, spent three seasons at the University of Connecticut before transferring to Michigan State for the 2025 season.
He is the first defensive back taken by Saskatchewan in Round 1 since Nelson Lokombo went second overall.
The Ottawa REDBLACKS opened Tuesday’s eight-round draft by selecting Winnipeg-born offensive lineman Giordano Vaccaro, who played at the University of Manitoba before transferring to Purdue in 2025.
The other first-round selections were, in order, offensive lineman Niklas Henning (Toronto Argonauts), linebacker Daniel Djabome (Edmonton Elks), defensive end Nuer Gatkouth (Winnipeg Blue Bombers), offensive lineman Jonathan Denis (Hamilton Tiger-Cats), linebacker Eric Rascoe (Calgary Stampeders), receiver Nate Demontagnac (B.C. Lions), tight end Rohan Jones (Montreal Alouettes) and Bell.
Saskatchewan’s next pick is in the second round, 18th overall.
Beyond that, the Roughriders pick 29th (Round 3), 38th (Round 4), 47th (Round 5), 56th (Round 6), 65th (Round 7) and 74th (Round 8).
