(VERSION FRANÇAISE SUIT)

MONTREAL – Eloa Latendresse-Regimbald of the McGill University Redbirds was selected in the seventh round, 58th overall, by the Edmonton Elks in the 2026 CFL Canadian Draft on Tuesday.

The 6-foot-4, 196-pound Montreal native becomes the sixth McGill quarterback ever drafted and the first since 1966.

Of the 74 players selected, 45 came from U SPORTS institutions, 28 from NCAA programs and one played on both sides of the border.

A three-time team MVP, the 22-year-old physical education senior was among the top prospects invited to the CFL’s national combine in Edmonton from March 27 to 29. He recorded a 10-foot, 10.5-inch broad jump — the 10th-best mark in combine history.

Latendresse-Régimbald holds the school’s all-time touchdown record with 31 rushing TDs in 32 regular-season games. He surpassed the previous rushing mark of 21 set by Tom Barbeau (1975-78), as well as the total TD record of 25, also held by Barbeau (27 games).

Nicknamed “ELR,” he also became McGill’s all-time rushing leader with 2,622 yards on 298 carries, eclipsing the previous record held by Shawn Linden (2,323 yards on 438 carries from 1994-97). Both players appeared in 32 career games.

Latendresse-Régimbald started all 32 regular-season games over four seasons. He threw at least one touchdown pass in 23 games and rushed for at least one TD in 23 contests. He recorded 12 100-yard rushing games, including a career-high 187 yards on 22 carries at Laval on Oct. 20, 2024.

He also passed for 300 or more yards in six games, highlighted by a 422-yard performance (20-for-38, one TD) in a 29-26 win at Sherbrooke on Sept. 6, 2024.

Previous McGill quarterbacks drafted into the CFL include Rich Ripstein (1966), Tom Skypeck (1963), John Roberts (1962), Emil Bosacki (1956) and Graeme Strathdee (1953).

Over eight rounds, 61.5 per cent of selections came from U SPORTS programs (46 of 74, including one dual-background player). The Ontario University Athletics conference led the way with 22 picks, followed by Canada West (16), the RSEQ (six) and the AUS (two).

Players are eligible for the draft in their senior year, unless they successfully petition for early eligibility.

In total, 18 of 27 U SPORTS football programs had at least one player selected. Calgary and Windsor led with six picks each, followed by Wilfrid Laurier with five.

Offensive linemen were the most selected U SPORTS players (15), followed by wide receivers (14), linebackers (13), defensive backs (11), defensive linemen (nine), running backs (five), kickers (three), tight ends (two) and one quarterback.

Since the first CFL draft in 1952, a total of 3,346 players have been selected from U SPORTS and its predecessor organizations (CIS, CIAU, SIFL). By conference, that includes 1,638 from OUA schools, 914 from Canada West, 494 from RSEQ programs and 300 from the AUS.

Currently, approximately 200 Canadian university players are on opening-day rosters across the CFL’s nine teams.

The full results of the 2026 CFL Draft are available online.

ALL-TIME CFL DRAFT DISTRIBUTION FROM U SPORTS CONFERENCES

(NOTE: Due to multi-changing conference sizes since 1952, teams are grouped by actual geographical region, rather than which conference they were in. For example, Bishop’s all-time draft picks are listed as part of the Quebec conference, rather than the years spent in the AUS)
