Sustainable Orillia is empowering residents through education, advocacy and community initiatives that make environmental responsibility achievable

Sustainable Orillia is being recognized for turning environmental concern into meaningful, community-driven action.

The organization has become a leading voice for sustainability in Orillia, helping residents better understand the role they can play in protecting the environment while offering practical ways to take part.

Through a combination of education, advocacy and hands-on initiatives, the organization has made sustainability feel achievable.

Their work focuses on bringing people together — from students to seniors — and equipping them with the tools and knowledge needed to make more environmentally conscious choices in their everyday lives.

Sustainable Orillia’s impact has not gone unnoticed, earning the group this year’s OrilliaMatters Community Builders Award in the Environment category.

“The initial surprise came when we heard that we were even nominated. That was really lovely,” said Sarah Patterson, president of Sustainable Orillia. “When we won, it was the icing on the cake and the cherry on top.”

Operating entirely on volunteer support, the organization is powered by individuals who dedicate their time outside of full-time jobs and personal commitments. That dedication has helped build a strong foundation for environmental leadership within the community.

“This is huge for the entire organization because this is a committee that is operating entirely on the work of volunteers,” Patterson said. “To have some recognition for trying to make a difference in the community gives them all a morale boost.”

Sustainable Orillia has played an important role in shaping local conversations around environmental responsibility.

From advocating for the City of Orillia’s adoption of a Climate Change Policy to hosting educational events like the annual Green Innovation Weekend EV show, the group has worked to make sustainability a visible and ongoing priority.

Their approach goes beyond awareness, focusing instead on tangible, solution-based strategies rooted in science and community engagement.

Workshops and public sessions break down complex environmental issues into clear, local relevance, helping residents better understand both the challenges and the actions they can take.

In doing so, Sustainable Orillia has helped shift sustainability from an abstract idea into something that is considered in everyday decision-making across the community.

“I think there’s a common understanding in this group that without a stable environment, nothing else really matters,” Patterson said. “If that’s not stable then everything else falls apart.”

Community members and supporters say Sustainable Orillia stands out for its ability to lead by example while inspiring others to get involved. Their work continues to support broader environmental priorities within the city, helping to inform initiatives and strengthen Orillia’s long-term sustainability goals.

“A little bit of recognition around the work that’s happening is really encouraging and will just help bolster our motivation to keep going,” Patterson said. “We feel heartfelt gratitude.”

Through its continued commitment to education, advocacy and community engagement, Sustainable Orillia is helping build a sustainable future that reflects the values and collective effort of the community it serves.

The Environment award recognizes an individual or group for their meaningful and positive contributions to the environment, both man-made and natural. Their efforts may include private initiatives, such as designing an innovative energy-efficient home, or public projects, such as leading a re-greening initiative.
