A source has confirmed to Postmedia that the NHL team’s search for a new hockey boss is entering its next phase, with candidates who impressed enough in the first round of interviews now being invited for in-person conversations.

The search has been a busy one, with conversations led by president of hockey operations Jim Rutherford.
It’s understood that two of the candidates making it to the next round are Shane Doan, who carried the title of special adviser to the general manager for the Toronto Maple Leafs, and Evan Gold, one of the Boston Bruins’ assistant general managers.
Also in the mix is Canucks assistant general manager Ryan Johnson, upon whom Rutherford heaped praise at his end-of-season press conference last month.
It’s also possible, though not confirmed, that Gold’s Boston colleague Jamie Langenbrunner — he’s also an AGM in Beantown — is still in the mix. Same goes for the two B.C. candidates: Calgary Flames assistant general manager Brad Pascall and Tampa Bay Lightning Jeff Tambellini.
Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman suggests that former Buffalo GM Kevyn Adams may still be in the mix, as well as Florida AGM Brent Peterson.

It’s understood that alongside Rutherford in the interviews has been chairman Francesco Aquilini, which makes sense given the high affect the future of the franchise this hire will make, and also Dax Aquilini, Francesco’s nephew who has long been tapped as the future face of ownership.
At his April 19 press conference, Rutherford confirmed the dismissal of previous GM Patrik Allvin. Rutherford had hired Allvin in January 2022, shortly after he himself was hired on as the team’s president of hockey operations.
Rutherford’s future is up in the air by his own acknowledgment.
“I had a lot of thoughts this year about my future,” Rutherford admitted during the presser. “Right now, my focus is on getting a GM and getting through the draft.
“Then I will think a lot more seriously about what makes sense.”
“I feel I haven’t done as good a job as I would like to,” he added. “Where I’m at this point in my life I can do what I want. I like this franchise a lot and I want to do what’s right for them.”
