President Sergio Mattarella said
Monday that he has accepted an invitation from Italy’s
victorious 2025 Davis Cup and Billie Jean King Cup teams to
attend a match at the Italian Open, which is underway in Rome,
as he received them at the Quirinal Palace.

Italy’s world number one Jannik Sinner will be aiming to
continue his hot winning streak at the Rome tournament after
triumphing at the Madrid Open on Sunday to become the first man
to win five consecutive Masters 1000 titles.

“I don’t want to be seen as some kind of talisman, because I’m
not one at all, but the value of our tennis players, both women
and men, allows us to look forward to the Italian Open with
renewed and consolidated confidence,” Mattarella said.

“The Davis Cup victory and the 2025 Billie Jean King Cup victory
were an unimaginable achievement,” he added, referring to
Italy’s third consecutive Davis Cup triumph and their second
consecutive BJK Cup one.

“It shows that the first victory wasn’t a one-off, but rather
the result that puts Italian tennis on the map around the
world.”
