Works to boost capacity, accessibility, and the user experience at Watford Leisure Centre – Central, in Peace Prospect off Hempstead Road, are due to start on Monday (August 18).
Once complete, it will offer a mind and body studio, a multi-purpose fitness studio, and a spin studio featuring 30 Keiser bikes allowing for a wider variety of group exercises.

Every area “from functional training and free weights to resistance and cardio” is set to be expanded and improved.
The number of pieces of equipment which has been IFI accredited, meaning it is certified as fully inclusive for both disabled and non-disabled people, will nearly double.

Work on the main gym area will begin in late September 2025 and be carried out in two stages.

Completion is scheduled for March 2026.

The project is funded by Watford Borough Council – contributing up to £2.5 million – and Everyone Active – putting in approximately £560,000.
Councillor Tim Williams, who is responsible for neighbourhood services and parks, said: “It’s great to see work starting soon on the improvements to Watford Leisure Centre – Central.
“This marks a significant investment in one of our town’s most valued community facilities.
“This upgrade will modernise the centre, improve the experience for users, and support the health and wellbeing of residents across Watford.
“It’s an important step in ensuring the leisure centre continues to meet local needs now and into the future.”
