$5M MRI upgrade underway at White Rock hospital

Nearly $5 million in improvements are underway to Peace Arch Hospital’s MRI services.
The upgrades will boost access and scan times, and provide flexible positioning options, “making the experience more comfortable,” a news release issued Monday (May 4) states.
“People getting timely access to MRI scans is crucial to help health-care teams diagnose conditions faster and more accurately,” Minister of Health Josie Osborne said in the release.
“This important MRI upgrade will ensure people living in and around White Rock and South Surrey continue to receive timely access to improved, life-saving medical imaging technology that’s close to home.”
The work will see the existing MRI refurbished, with its core magnet kept and the surrounding technology upgraded, the release explains.
While that is underway, a mobile MRI will be on-site “ensuring people can still get the scans they need when they need them,” the release adds.
MRI scans are used to help identify and plan treatments for conditions including cancers, heart disease, neurological conditions and injuries. Last year, approximately 9,200 of the scans were conducted at Peace Arch Hospital.
The updated services are anticipated to be up and running late this year, with “faster, more reliable diagnoses and a better care experience for people in White Rock and South Surrey,” Fraser Health president and CEO Dermot Kelly said in the release.
“By retaining the existing MRI magnet and modernizing the technology around it, we are bringing leading-edge imaging to the community in a way that is both efficient and environmentally responsible.”
The province partnered on the upgrade with Peace Arch Hospital Foundation, backed by local donors.
The ‘IMAGINE’ campaign “helps us continue to provide exceptional care to the community,” PAHF CEO Stephanie Beck said in the release.
