Ongoing work to upgrade the sanitary sewer and maintenance holes — aka manholes — along Eglinton Avenue West in Mississauga will shut down one of the main access points to a popular walking/jogging trail for the next three months.

Peel Region public works officials in charge of the project said in an online update this week the task being completed, which is needed to “keep providing (residents/businesses) with high-quality wastewater services,” requires the Eglinton Avenue West/Barbertown Road access point to the Culham Trail be closed to the public until sometime in August (see map below).

The closure is necessary, project leaders added, in order “to keep pedestrians safe during this construction work.”

The region said Culham Trail can still be accessed from all other trail access points, including the Hewick Meadows south entrance on the south side of Eglinton Avenue West.

“Pedestrians can cross Eglinton Avenue West to access the trail using the intersection at Inverness Boulevard or at Mississauga Road,” Peel public works officials said, adding the Culham Trail parking lot accessible from Eglinton Avenue West will also remain open during the construction period.

Region officials noted construction will continue until “late summer,” but they added that timeline could change due to weather and/or other unexpected events.

Working hours are from 7 a.m.-7 p.m., Monday to Friday.

The work is being completed by Capital Sewer Services Inc. and supported by AECOM Canada ULC, both under contract to Peel Region, officials said.

At more than 35 years old, the Culham Trail runs some 13.5 kilometres along the Credit River in Mississauga’s west/northwest end.

Beginning at Erindale Park, the trail continues through the Riverwood Conservancy and then north to Pinecliff Park. It winds through both urban and natural settings with access to many green spaces, the city said, adding the trail is popular with walkers, hikers, joggers and cyclists.

The work this spring and summer is part of a larger project — the Erin Mills Trunk Sewer rehabilitation — that involves tasks being completed at various locations that include:

Ninth Line West, from Osprey Boulevard to Erin Centre Boulevard.
Erin Centre Boulevard, from Ninth Line West to Winston Churchill Boulevard.
Erin Centre Boulevard, from 2585 Erin Centre Blvd. to Erin Mills Parkway.
Eglinton Avenue West, from The Chase to the Credit River crossing 200 metres west of Hewick Lane.
