An eye-popping amount of draft capital went into the Dallas Wings’ 2026 season-opener.
The Wings will tip off their season on Saturday with a star-studded affair against the Indiana Fever at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. The matchup will pit the WNBA’s last four No. 1 overall picks against each other — two for Dallas and two for Indiana.
Meanwhile the Fever are led by the biggest star in the WNBA. Caitlin Clark was Rookie of the Year and an MVP candidate after the Fever took her first overall in 2024, but played just 13 games last year in a season largely lost to injury. Even still, Indiana made a playoff run to the semifinals thanks in large part to Aliyah Boston, the No. 1 pick in 2023 who finished sixth in MVP voting last season.
The teams share a ton of similarities. Where they differ: The Wings finished with a 10-34 record while the Fever finished 24-20 and impressed in the playoffs.
But if you squint your eyes you can picture the Wings following the same trajectory as the Fever after each side won the draft lottery in back-to-back years, and possibly even competing for a playoff spot as soon as this season.
