South Surrey Rotary’s shredding event signs stolen — again

With another Rotary shredding fundraising event on its way to South Surrey, signs advertising the event have gone missing.
The Rotary Club of South Surrey is hosting its biannual Shred-It event this Saturday, May 16, at the Ocean Park Safeway, but once again, the lawn signs letting people know about it have been pilfered.
“It’s ongoing, it’s so frustrating. Those signs cost us about $20 … I think about six or seven so far this year have gone missing,” said Rotary Club of South Surrey past president Deirdre O’Ruairc, who confirmed it happens each time they hold such events.
She noted the signs have gone missing from random spots throughout Surrey and White Rock, and since both cities have given the club permission to put up the signs, she’s certain it’s not anyone with either city.
“The thing is all the money raised goes directly to local projects and to — we have an international project in Cambodia, a children’s orphanage,” O’Ruairc said, sharing that it is disheartening for it to happen to a group that just wants to help others.
Proceeds from the May 16 will go toward that orphanage as well as local groups and organizations, including Sources, their food bank, and the Men’s Shed in South Surrey.
She encouraged anyone who might have taken the signs to bring them back, without repercussions.
“There’s a number on the sign and there’s a phone number on the back. They can phone and we can just pick them … we’d just happy to get them back,” she said. “The signs are such a visual thing — people see it and it’s a way (of) getting word out, because the more people that show up for the event, the more money we make (for good causes).”
The upcoming Shred-It event happens in the Ocean Park Safeway parking lot on Saturday, May 16 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
